Looking at Heaven

Looking at Heaven

Based on a true story.

During the religious persecution in Mexico (1926-1928), men and women known as the Cristeros fought against the federal government in defense of their faith. José Sánchez del Río seeks his parents' blessing to join the Cristero army. Despite their initial refusal due to his young age, he convinces them by arguing that there has never been a better opportunity to earn heaven. In a heroic act to save his general, José is captured and taken back to his hometown to be executed for treason against the country. The paradox of the story is that the highest authority and the one who gives the order for José's execution was his first communion godfather. Saint José Sánchez del Río was canonized by Pope Francis in Rome on October 16, 2016
